BIO
Best known for 15 years in the United States and abroad as a songwriter, composer, and musician, Ed Harris has also created a vast body of work in the visual arts. Paintings, drawings, and sculptures have emerged, paralleling his accomplishments in music, while offering fresh insights into the diverse levels of his sensitivity and creative output.
Early on, Ed found himself in the company of artwork created by his parents, and learned from their examples, and especially from the teachings of his father, whose lengthy career as a college art professor embraced numerous subjects and media. In addition, there were countless visits to artists’ studios, and to major museums and galleries in multiple cities.
Ed’s fifteen years of contact with established musicians and an admiring public also had a major impact on his work. Touring in countries such as Japan, Italy, England, and Iceland- and 48 states-ensured exposure to a broad spectrum of dialects and patterns of daily life clearly reflected in his artwork. These contemporary aspects of human existence have transformed themselves into paintings, drawings, and sculptures that boldly and swiftly engage the viewer, and invite exploration of their intricate, interlaced identities.
Many of the interwoven paintings demonstrate the loving patience and commitment that are hallmarks of his style. Colors that merge when experienced from across the room reveal their inherent identities when viewed closely. Ultimately, these collective “cells” of color present themselves as a coherent, solid, living form.
Some of the larger works embody a commanding presence, with contrasting tonal qualities, engaging rhythms and high-resolution impact zones that deliver powerful thrusts at a momentous speed.
Smaller paintings impart multifaceted personalities, which unfailingly appear to connect with viewers. There is an inherent assurance that there is something for everyone. Some of the works are muscular, while others deliver smooth rhythms that flow in time to a heartbeat. Together they share a common bond.
Finally, Ed continues to participate in artists’ residencies both here and abroad where his formidable work ethic and outgoing personality ensure a considerable body of work, and an open dialogue with artists from around the world.
